The Missing Key

During his interview with investigators Smith told the officers that Shelton had admitted  that on the night of the murder he (Shelton) and Blackwelder had gotten inside Gunnarsson’s apartment with a key Blackwelder had.

Trial testimony from State’s witness Bonnie Whitley, Gunnarsson’s landlady, showed that besides her master key, only three people had keys to the victim’s apartment.  She testified that she knew Michael Blackwelder as a friend of Viktor Gunnarsson and that Blackwelder had lived with the victim prior to the murder and still received his mail there (TP. 1380-1381).
